Tonya may take fight to court

SCOTT ZERR, EDMONTON SUN

Just when everyone in Edmonton had thought they'd heard the last of Tonya Harding, the Bad Girl of figure skating has popped up again. Despite being stopped by the Cougar Gym's Amy Johnson in an Edmonton boxing match on June 25 - and then having her appeal of the outcome rejected by the Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission - Harding and her camp remain unsatisfied and are now contemplating a legal challenge.

Paul Brown, Harding's manager/trainer, has retained New York lawyer Richard Dolan to investigate.

Dolan and his partner Peter Schlam made waves earlier this year when they sued the World Boxing Council on behalf of their client, Graciano Rocchigiani, and were awarded $30 million by a federal court.

The WBC, which wrongfully stripped Rocchigiani of his world light heavyweight title, was forced into bankruptcy, only to be saved when Rocchigiani settled for less money.

Brown has continually claimed that Johnson received extra time to recover from a second-round knockdown and that Johnson appeared to quit, only to be forced back into the ring by trainer, Larry Fleming, and her father/manager, Mike Johnson. Fleming scoffed at all of Brown's claims and the EBWC denied Harding's appeal during a hearing on Sept. 1.
"What we can do and what will be done remains to be seen," said Dolan from his New York office yesterday.

"Ms. Harding and her manager want to pursue this matter because they believe they were treated unfairly. I can't imagine them dropping this and I believe it wouldn't be wise for them to drop it."

Brown added he's "taking care of business and I'm taking care of Tonya."

If Dolan chooses to pursue the matter, the case would likely be presented before a judicial review, explained Ed Pearson, executive director of the EBWC.

"We'd have to show up and explain what we did and why we did it and the judge would make sure that all the legal aspects of the (appeal) hearing were done properly," said Pearson.

"The judge looks at us as the boxing experts and sees if we did everything we were supposed to do. Generally speaking, the judge would not second-guess the commission."

Pearson isn't intimidated about a potential fight with Dolan and his firm, despite their monumental knockout over the WBC.

"Tonya lost the fight and she doesn't think everything was fair and is trying to drum up as much interest as she can," Pearson added.

"I see no benefit in doing that because she shouldn't even be fighting. She's got little or no talent. This is more of a pain in the neck than anything else and all I'm saying is 'Why bother?' "

I have to give it to Paul Brown for being a man of his word by standing buy Tonya Harding the way he does despite comments by people like Ed Pearson..

Quote Pearson:

Why??.... Why??..

To stick it to people like you who think they can walk all over Tonya Harding as if she is a "thing" and not a "person"... THATS WHY!!!!

Not a big fan of lawsuits, but glad in this case that Paul Brown got a high-power one to pursue their case with the Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission. I can also say from seeing the line at the convention center there that wrestling appears as big a draw in Edmonton as it is (or has been) in most major US venues.

Sorry for being away, Leo. Will repost what I just posted in a new thread: After visiting Edmonton in mid-September, I had planned to call the Edmonton Sun folks by early October. But a catastrophic computer crash in late September took more than a month to recover from; I had backups for many things but not for others, and other events kept me busy since.
